CASE STUDY

The President of a top medical association recently faced giving the yearly plenary address to over 30,000 attendees (online/in-person). She wanted the speech to be truly great—something her audience would talk about, remember, and act upon.
Challenge

Her theme was her lifelong passion, but it was also controversial – not, at first glance, what her audience wanted to hear.

Approach

My approach was highly collaborative, inquisitive, and analytical. I interviewed the President to uncover key messages, facts, examples, and stories she hadn’t considered. Capturing the speaker’s passion and making the talk “human” is key – that’s what makes it interesting.  Collaboration is key.  I could go into a closet and write a great speech, but without the speaker’s involvement, their heart and soul would be missing.  I used my iterative approach – working together, editing back and forth -- to ensure I captured the President’s voice.  She had to be 100% comfortable with the content to captivate and fascinate the audience.

Impact

The speech the President feared would be “boring” was fascinating, inspiring, motivating, and truly great!  I coached her to deliver the talk with confidence, warmth, humor, and in her own style. She received many kudos from a tough audience. By working with me, the President cemented her leadership in a slowly changing arena of medicine, where her legacy will be felt for years to come.

Executive Communications Coaching

Elevate your communications impact

Never has communication been so important, yet so difficult. Executives must communicate all day, every day, through remote platforms and in person, from formal presentations with slides to spontaneous and impromptu conversations. But attention spans are shorter than ever. Back-to-back meetings compete with a 24/7 stream of texts and emails. Using AI well and safely is another time-consuming challenge.

Penny has been empowering top executives in complex fields to communicate as leaders in fast-paced, high-stakes environments for 20 years.
